The Patriots placed WR Torry Holt on injured reserve Sunday with a knee injury, ending his season.
Holt had missed several practices and faced an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. The Patriots appear very deep at receiver with Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Brandon Tate, Julian Edelman and Taylor Price near-locks to make the team.
Holt's injury opens the door for two special-teams contributors, Sam Aiken and Matthew Slater, possibly to battle for the final WR spot.
Heading into what would have been his 12th season, Holt currently ranks 10th in NFL history with 13,382 receiving yards and 11th in receptions with 920.
The team also waived S Ross Ventone, re-signed WR Buddy Farnham and signed free-agent OL Brian Simmons.
