In a game where the Texans lost rookie RB Ben Tate to a right ankle injury, first-string RB Arian Foster impressed in the Texans' preseason opener at Arizona, rushing for 31 yards on four carries. Foster got the start and played the first two series of the game. Steve Slaton, listed second on the depth chart at running back and likely to contribute in passing situations and play frequently, caught one pass for 21 yards but gained just 22 yards rushing on 10 carries. Also, he fumbled on a 3rd-and-goal carry at the Arizona 1-yard line, and the Cardinals recovered for a touchback. Fumbles plagued Slaton last season — he had seven in just 11 games, five of which were recovered by the opposition. Tate suffered the injury on a 12-yard run on just his second carry of the game. On Aug. 15, head coach Gary Kubiak said Tate's injury was "very significant" and would require surgery.
