Morgan Cox's flawless performance as a long-snapper in a preseason-opening win over Carolina Thursday night has convinced the Ravens that he can become their regular long-snapper.

As a result, Baltimore released veteran LS Matt Katula, who had handled the team's long-snapping duties the past five years. Katula had signed a five-year contract extension in 2008.

Chronic tendinitis in his snapping elbow had plagued Katula toward the end of last season, but Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that the veteran's health didn't play a part in the decision to release him.

Cox, who is an undrafted rookie out of Tennessee, snapped on seven punts and two field goals Thursday night without any problem.

The release of Katula opened a roster spot for DB Brad Jones, whom the Ravens are re-signing after having cut him in June.
