The Patriots' defensive line became significantly thinner Friday as DL Ty Warren was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury. The 6-5, 300-pound defensive end started 12-of-13 games in 2009, finishing with 57 tackles and one sack. The seven-year veteran has started 92-of-105 games in his career with 20½ sacks.

New England also announced that it has reinstated LB Derrick Burgess to the active roster from the reserve/did-not-report list. Burgess is a nine-year NFL veteran and started 6-of-16 games in '09 with five sacks. He had reportedly told friends he was considering retiring before deciding to report.

Warren is one of the best run-defending defensive ends in the league, and the Patriots are not loaded at the position. Veteran D-linemen Gerard Warren and Mike Wright are most likely to fill in at the DE spots as Ron Brace and Damione Lewis have disappointed this preseason. This also could create an opening for DE Brandon Deaderick and DT Kade Weston — two of the team's seventh-round draft picks — to make the roster.
