Even though the Eagles are known as one of the hardest-hitting teams in training camp, even they had to hold back LB Ernie Sims, who appears to be on a mission to prove his doubters wrong. Observers say Sims fits the Eagles' fast-flowing defense very well, and his hard hitting has made him a tone setter, with one team source calling Sims "an animal out there" in practice. But Sims has been so violent at times that head coach Andy Reid actually has had to pull him out of drills to protect the players Sims was hitting. Sims laid a hit on RB Eldra Buckley that was one of the hardest in camp to date, and Reid said that even though he pulled Sims out, the collision was a good thing. "His first reaction is he wants to take your head off and I appreciate that," Reid said. "I love that attitude. I think that's contagious." Sims, Stewart Bradley and Akeem Jordan have looked good at linebacker so far and could make the group a strong threesome after a season in which the LB play was down.
