The Patriots switched gears Wednesday, re-signing RB Thomas Clayton and releasing OG Darnell Stapleton.

Clayton, a 2007 sixth-round draft choice of the 49ers, had been cut by New England last Friday after first being signed by the Patriots on June 11. He spent most of the 2007-08 seasons on the Niners' practice squad before being activated for the final two games of '08. He was on injured reserve during '09.

As for Stapleton, the Patriots had signed him only Monday. He also spent all of last season on I.R. after having started 12 games at right guard for the Steelers in 2008.
