If there has been a downside to a mostly upbeat Lions training camp, it is that ORT Gosder Cherilus hasn't nailed down a starting job after an offseason of being pressured by the coaching staff to produce after two inconsistent seasons. Cherilus continues to split reps with 12th-year veteran Jon Jansen on the first team, and our sources expect the battle to wage on through most of the preseason. Last year, left guard was a season-long problem, and the team wants badly for someone — preferably Cherilus — to step up at right tackle. The Lions want to run the ball and maul people at the line, but to date Cherilus hasn't asserted his physical side on a consistent enough basis. Jansen has been solid, but it's clear to people we talk to that Cherilus has the physical gifts to win this battle if his play improves. As of yet, that hasn't happened.
