ORT Andre Smith's placement on the physically-unable-to-perform list with left foot and conditioning issues at the beginning of training camp was another setback for the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 draft, who played just six games as a rookie because of a broken foot. As Smith, whom head coach Marvin Lewis said would "probably" be back in 2-3 weeks at the beginning of training camp — which means he would return some time in August, based on that timetable — works to get healthy, the Bengals will again count upon Dennis Roland to fill in at right tackle. Roland, a undrafted free agent in 2006 who started 12 games at right tackle last season, is listed as the first-team right tackle, with Smith, who has received instruction from Bengals coaching intern and former Steelers C Dermontti Dawson early in camp, the second-team tackle. When Smith, who had offseason foot surgery, is activated from the PUP list, he likely would vie with Roland for the starting job. Roland played the entire first half and the first series of the second half in the Bengals' preseason opener vs. Dallas.
