Cowboys DE Marcus Spears suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee Thursday in the team's final practice in San Antonio. He's expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks, throwing into doubt his availability for Week One of the regular season.

Spears appeared to incur the injury when another player rolled up the back of his leg during drills. Spears has never missed a game in five NFL seasons, although he did sprain the MCL in his other knee during preseason of his rookie season.

Spears is playing on a one-year restricted free-agent tender of $1.226 million. He has started 71-of-80 games during his first five seasons, but even before the injury, he was in danger of losing his starting job to either Stephen Bowen or Jason Hatcher.
