The Patriots signed veteran OL Eric Ghiaciuc on Wednesday to help bolster their depth up front.

Pro Bowl OLG Logan Mankins is embroiled in a contract dispute with the team and is holding out, and Nick Kaczur — who was taking his place — has missed the past few practices with an injury.

Terms of Ghiaciuc’s contract were not released. The Patriots also released undrafted rookie OL John Wise.

Ghiaciuc, 6-4 and 303 pounds, has played five NFL seasons with the Bengals and Chargers, starting 42 of 48 games during his career, mostly at center. Ghiaciuc signed with the Browns this April but was waived in June.

Wise, who was attempting to make the leap from college wrestler at Illinois, was signed by the Patriots after the draft as a rookie free agent. The Patriots had previous success turning Stephen Neal, the team’s starting guard the past few seasons, from college wrestler into an NFL starter.
