The Broncos signed former Titans RB LenDale White on Wednesday as insurance with two of their top backs battling injuries. To make room on the roster, Denver cut RB Kolby Smith.

With projected starter Knowshon Moreno having suffered what has been reported as a strained hamstring that is likely to sideline him at least three weeks and backup Correll Buckhalter also less than 100 percent, the Broncos elected to bring in White. They did so despite the fact that he has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, and the fact that Seattle and his former college coach at USC, Pete Carroll, released him not long after having acquired him from Tennessee in a trade during the NFL draft.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora also is reporting that the Broncos offered a contract to former Redskins RB Ladell Betts but that the free agent turned down the offer.

Last season White rushed for only 222 yards and two touchdowns on 64 carries in a reduced role backing up NFL rushing leader Chris Johnson.
