The 49ers finished up a very busy Friday morning with the signing of first-round OG Mike Iupati to a five-year contract. Earlier in the day, the Niners signed three other 2010 draft picks — first-round OT Anthony Davis, second-round S Taylor Mays and third-round LB Navorro Bowman. With the singing of Iupati, the Niners now have their entire 2010 draft class under contract.
The 6-5, 331-pound Iupati wasted no time making a strong impression in the Niners’ early offseason practice sessions and is expected to begin the season as the starting left guard.
A gentle giant off the field, Iupati was widely considered the top guard available in this year’s draft. In PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that Iupati “offers versatility to one day play either tackle position” with a “combination of size, brute strength, movement skills and arm length (that) should enable him to dominate as a road-grading left guard for years to come."
