The Browns signed second-round pick T.J. Ward, a safety from Oregon, on Monday. He will compete to start in the Browns' defensive backfield in his first NFL season.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ward recorded 68 tackles in eight games as a senior at Oregon. He missed five games after suffering an ankle injury in a loss to Boise State. The 23-year-old Ward appeared in 37 games at Oregon, notching 190 tackles and three interceptions.
Ward, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote in PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, is a "tough, competitive compactly built short-area banger who looks most comfortable in the box." Ward, Nawrocki wrote, "makes his presence felt near the line of scrimmage and should contribute readily on special teams."
