Kaye Cowher, the wife of CBS NFL analyst and ex-Steelers coach Bill Cowher, died Friday of skin cancer. She was 54.

She died in Raleigh, N.C., where the family has lived since 2006.

"Kaye was such a loving and compassionate person and she was the foundation of our family," Bill Cowher said in a statement Saturday. "Kaye was always at my side throughout my career as a player, coach, NFL analyst and, most importantly, as a parent to our three daughters Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay. They will miss their mother dearly."

The Cowhers met at North Carolina State, where Bill played linebacker and Kaye played basketball, and married in 1981. Kaye led N.C. State to a 29-5 record and the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 1978. She and her twin sister, Faye, played one season with the New York Stars of the Women's Professional Basketball League, the forerunner of the WNBA, and two seasons with the New Jersey Gems.

A private funeral service will be held Monday in North Carolina.
