The Steelers announced Friday that they had extended head coach Mike Tomlin's contract through the 2012 season. The contract contains an option year for 2013.

"I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers," Tomlin said in a team-issued statement Friday. "I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh."

Tomin, 38, has led the Steelers to a 31-17 regular-season record in three years on the job. The Steelers won the AFC North in 2007 and '08, and Pittsburgh captured Super Bowl XLIII at the end of his second season.

"Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time," Steelers president Art Rooney II said Friday. "His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years."
