Dolphins DE Phillip Merling will miss the 2010 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon, reports indicate. The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the injury took place during offseason workouts.

It's been a bad offseason for Merling, the first pick of the second round in 2008. He's facing a felony battery charge for his role in a late May incident involving his pregnant girlfriend.

PFW recently reported that the Dolphins were not pleased with Merling even before he was arrested for battery, and he was going to enter training camp on very thin ice. Rookie Jared Odrick is likely to replace Merling as the No. 1 defensive right end.
