Former Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell was in court Tuesday and entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, was arrested July 5 after a bottle of codeine syrup was found in his Mobile, Ala., home. He did not have a prescription for the opiate.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 11.

Oakland cut Russell in May after three disappointing seasons.
