Giants must move on without Jones

Rookie S Chad Jones nearly lost his leg in a car accident this offseason and almost certainly will never play professional football again. The Giants drafted Jones to be factor in three areas: on special teams coverage, as a punt returner and as a safety. That's three areas the team now needs to find answers for. There almost certainly will be coverage solutions for Jones' loss, but the other two positions could be harder to fill. Mario Manningham and Aaron Ross now appear to be the leading candidates to return punts, even though neither one of them have handled a punt in the NFL. Safety would be in great hands if Kenny Phillips is back from a serious knee injury. And Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant and Michael Johnson all have starting experience. But one or two more injuries at the position really could cripple the depth and leave the Giants in a tough spot as the season approaches.
