It became quickly obvious in spring practice sessions that second-round S Taylor Mays had superb physical skills tailor-made for the pro level. It was a different story, however, as far as the mental skills are concerned. "He is so damn fast with great size and speed," one daily team observer said of Mays, whose reps steadily increased as the sessions wore on. "But he was really slow to recognize things. If he can eventually learn all the different angles and get a better grip on the defense, he could really be something. But that's a big if." We hear Mays already has been told that he won't be starting right away and will be used in certain packages. Where Mays really could earn his keep is on special teams — an area the team is intent on improving. "There's a feeling the big reason they lost some close games were problems on special teams, and he could conceivably be a very good fit," the observer said. "But the problem is he just might not have the right kind of special-teams mentality."
