The Browns signed S Larry Asante, their fifth-round pick, to a four-year, $1.96 million contract, Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com reported on Twitter on Wednesday. Asante, who started 36 games in his final three seasons at Nebraska, will compete for playing time in the Browns' secondary.
NationalFootballPost.com, which confirmed the FoxSports.com report, reported that Asante will get a signing bonus of about $170,000.
In PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, PFW personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that Asante "has some limitations in coverage but has starter-quality traits as a run defender in the box and could excel with good coaching if schemed to conceal his coverage deficiencies."
In other Browns news, the club announced Wednesday it had waived DL Keith Grennan and waived/injured TE Greg Estandia. Estandia appeared in four games with Cleveland last season, catching four passes for 45 yards, while Grennan was twice added and cut from the Browns' practice squad during the '09 campaign. Grennan was added to the Browns' roster on Jan. 6, 2010.
