The NFL has announced that free-agent RB LenDale White has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. The announcement confirms an earlier report that surfaced when White was unexpectedly released by the Seahawks on May 28.

In addition to the White suspension, the league handed free-agent DT Hollis Thomas an eight-game suspension for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances. The NFL had suspended Thomas for four games in 2006 for violating its steroid policy. He had appealed that penalty, claiming that his positive test resulted from his daily use of an asthma inhaler.

Thomas, 36, spent the first three games of the 2009 season with St. Louis and the last 13 with Carolina before becoming a free agent at the start of the 2010 league year. Thomas spent the first 10 years of his career in Philadelphia.
