The Chiefs announced Tuesday that they have signed 2010 fifth-round draft pick S Kendrick Lewis to an undisclosed contract.

Lewis, the first of the team's two fifth-round selections and the 136th pick overall, appeared in 44 games (38 starts) at Mississippi, producing 226 tackles (140 solo), six interceptions, 18 passes defended, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also registered 10 tackles for loss, three sacks and two blocked kicks.

In PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that the 6-0, 198-pound Lewis is "active and aggressive for an undersized player" but "lacks functional strength and stays stuck on blocks."

With RFA S Jarrad Page still unsigned and possibly on his way out of Kansas City, Lewis will be given a legitimate shot to be the Chiefs' starting free safety, likely competing with veteran Jon McGraw in training camp.
