The Browns signed rookie DE Clifton Geathers, a sixth-round pick from South Carolina, to a multiyear contract on Monday, the club announced.
The 6-7, 300-pound Geathers will contend for a backup role on the Cleveland defensive line. Geathers, 22, is the brother of Bengals DE Robert Geathers. Clifton's father, Robert Sr., was a third-round pick of the Bills in 1981. Clifton's uncle, Jumpy, played defensive tackle for four teams from 1984-1996.
In PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki noted that Clifton Geathers has "(very) rare arm length and overall size" but "(plays) too tall and does not sink his hips and anchor well against the run."
