Lions president Tom Lewand was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol Friday night, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Lewand has since been released from police custody and issued an apology Saturday night.

"I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them," Lewand said in a statement released by the team. "As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again."

Lewand has worked for the Lions organization for 16 years, and he took over the position of president from Matt Millen in December 2008. It is not yet known what sort of disciplinary action he will face from the team or the NFL.
