The most intriguing position to watch in 49ers training camp probably will be left outside linebacker, where incumbent Manny Lawson, a no-show until the team's mandatory minicamp, could have his work cut out for him holding off up-and-comer Ahmad Brooks. "It's a competition worth watching involving emerging players," one team insider said. "Manny really came on last year with a team-leading 6½ sacks, but what was just as significant was the way he and (fellow starting OLB) Parys Haralson turned the run back inside. The big thing will be whether Brooks can do the same thing. He could be a better pass rusher (five sacks in the final six games) and is a tremendous natural talent. The challenge for him is learning the playbook and being responsible, but he appears to be on the right track." Our sources believe the best-case scenario could be a fluid three-man rotation on the flanks involving Lawson, Haralson and Brooks.
