The agent for Panthers WR Steve Smith told PFW that Smith suffered a broken arm — the same one he broke in a game in December — on Saturday and could miss the start of training camp.

Derrick Fox said Smith was playing in a flag football game at his football camp when he lost his balance and suffered the break.

"It was just a freak thing," Fox said. "I don't think he'll miss any (regular season) games."

Fox would not confirm Smith's timetable for healing and returning to football but estimated it could be be between  four weeks, which is roughly the start of training camp, and eight weeks.

The Panthers open camp open camp in Wofford, S.C. on July 28. The Panthers open preseason play against the Ravens in Baltimore on Aug. 12, which will be just over eight weeks from when he suffered the injury.

The break occurred in the same arm as his previous injury, but in a different spot. Smith initially broke his right arm on a 27-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter against the Giants in Week 16 last season. Giants S Michael Johnson hit Smith as he caught the ball, but Smith held on for the score.

Smith missed the final game of last season with the injury and fell 18 yards short of his fifth straight 1,000-yard season.
