Steelers sign WR Sanders, two other picks

The Steelers announced the signings of three draft picks — WR Emmanuel Sanders, LB Stevenson Sylvester and RB Jonathan Dwyer — on Tuesday. They also announced the signing of WR Antonio Brown; news of him reaching a contract with Pittsburgh came earlier Tuesday.

The 5-11, 180-pound Sanders, a third-round pick from SMU, will compete for a reserve's role at wide receiver and could also factor in the return game. In PFW's 2010 Draft Preview, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki described Sanders as a "(slightly) built, physically underdeveloped slot receiver who consistently stands out on tape but will have to prove he is tough enough to survive playing between the numbers at the next level."

Sylvester, a fifth-round selection from Utah, could make his biggest contribution on special teams as a rookie. In the 2010 Draft Preview, Nawrocki wrote that the 6-foot-2, 231-pound Sylvester has "(good) football smarts" and "(plays) hard" but has "ordinary athletic ability and read-and-react skills."

The 5-foot-11, 229-pound Dwyer, who played collegiately at Georgia Tech and declared for the draft after his junior season, has a chance to contend for short-yardage carries as a rookie. Dwyer, Nawrocki wrote in the 2010 Draft Preview, has "(nice) inside run vision" and "(deceptive), competitive speed" but "(had) a soft, pudgy-looking body as a junior after bulking up" and "does not finish runs, too easily getting turned in the hole."
