The Chargers announced Friday that they have signed free-agent WR Josh Reed to a one-year contract.

Reed, 30, was a second-round draft pick of the Bills in 2002 and had spent his entire eight-year career in Buffalo. He has played in 115 games, starting 52, and had 311 catches for 3,575 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Bills chose not to re-sign him after his contract expired following the '09 season.

"We are excited to have Josh join us,” Chargers GM A.J. Smith said. “He was a consistent performer in Buffalo for many years. With his experience, he will be a solid complement to our receiving corps.”

With WR Vincent Jackson, an unsigned restricted free agent, threatening to hold out into the regular season, Reed was likely brought in as insurance. He could play a sizable role if Jackson sits out.
