The Chargers announced Wednesday that they have signed free-agent OT Tra Thomas to a one-year contract.

Thomas, 35, entered the league as a first-round pick of the Eagles in 1998. He spent 11 seasons in Philadelphia, playing in 166 games (starting 165) and earning three Pro Bowl nods. Thomas moved on to Jacksonville in '09, playing in just eight contests as a reserve. He was released in February.

“Tra is a talented player with a wealth of starting experience,” said Chargers GM A.J. Smith. “We have held him in high regard for many years. He will be added to the mix as we move forward in preparation for the upcoming season.”

Thomas was likely brought in by San Diego as insurance, as the team is facing the possibility of star OLT Marcus McNeill, an unsigned restricted free agent, holding out into the regular season. Thomas would be a candidate to start if McNeill does not report to the club.
