The Patriots officially announced the re-signing of OLB-DE Derrick Burgess, which was widely reported last week, and released WR Isaiah Stanback and OLB Bruce Davis.

Burgess did not have the impact many anticipated as a pass rusher when he was acquired from the Raiders for third- and fifth-round draft picks last season. He returns to compete for a front-seven spot on a defense with many new faces.

Stanback started last season on the practice squad and made it into six games, starting two but having little impact. The team signed free-agent WRs Torry Holt and David Patten and drafted WR Taylor Price this offseason, leaving Stanback on the outside looking in.

Davis also was in a numbers crunch. The former third-round pick of the Steelers was also on the practice squad most of last season, not seeing any action with the Patriots.
