Former Dolphins and Giants DB Jarvis Williams died Tuesday night at age 45 in north Florida.
According to a spokeswoman for the Putnam Community Medical Center, Williams passed away shortly before midnight in his hometown of Palatka, Fla. The medical examiner said the cause of death was an acute asthma attack.
A former safety at the University of Florida who was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame, Williams played six seasons (1988-93) with the Dolphins and one (1994) with the Giants.
"Jarvis Williams ... was not only a personal friend but a tremendous football player for both the Dolphins and the Gators," Nat Moore, vice president of alumni relations for the Dolphins, said in a statement Wednesday. "He dedicated his life to coaching and helping young people and it's a real tragedy for him to pass away at such an early age."
