Chargers S Kevin Ellison was arrested Monday on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, according to the Associated Press.
Ellison, 23, was pulled over for speeding in a school zone in Redondo Beach, Calif., when police found 100 Vicodin pills in his vehicle. He was booked and released on $10,000 bail.
Sgt. Peter Grimm said that Ellison did not have a prescription for the pain medication, and even if he did, it was still a larger number of pills than pharmacists traditionally distribute.
"It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Kevin Ellison," said Chargers GM A.J. Smith in a statement issued Tuesday. "We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
Ellison was drafted by San Diego in the sixth round in 2009. He played in 13 games as a rookie, starting nine, and had 52 tackles. He's expected to compete for a starting job in training camp.
