Sean Payton has shot down the talk that the Saints might be interested in signing former No. 1 overall draft choice JaMarcus Russell.

The Saints' head coach says now is not the right time for the Super Bowl champion to bring the former LSU star to New Orleans, which has only second-year man Chase Daniel and 2010 seventh-round pick Sean Canfield backing up QB Drew Brees. However, Payton said he wouldn't be surprised if another team took a flier on Russell.

Russell was released by Oakland on Thursday after three disappointing seasons.
