Panthers QB Moore still expected to open season as starter

Despite reports that rookie Jimmy Clausen turned heads in his first minicamp and could push Matt Moore for the starting spot in training camp, we hear it's still Moore's job to lose. The Panthers made it clear that Moore would be the starter in 2010 before the draft, but speculation about his status began after Carolina took Clausen in the second round.

While head coach John Fox has not explicitly said the starting spot is open for competition, there is a perception that Fox, in his contract year, would be willing to name Clausen the starter for Week One if the rookie outplayed Moore in the preseason.

The scenario that appears likely to play out is that Moore, who went 4-1 as a starter last season, will open the season as the starter. How long he continues in that role is up to him. As long as he plays well and the Panthers are in the race for a playoff spot, Clausen will be watching from the sideline.
