With pressing needs at other positions, some were surprised the Buccaneers spent a sixth-round pick on P Brent Bowden. GM Mark Dominik is so confident in Bowden's ability that he cut veteran P Sam Paulescu on Tuesday, handing Bowden the punting job instead of having the two compete for it in training camp.
"I feel very confident in (Bowden), and that's why I took him in the sixth (round)," Dominik told PFW on April 24. "I knew a lot of teams liked him and I wasn't going to take the chance to lose him. When you draft a punter, it might not be the most sexy pick, but when you step back and say, 'This guy is going to affect field position, he's going to play 16 straight games every year and sometimes these punters play 15, 20 years.' If you have conviction about a guy, it's time to take him. In the sixth round it made sense to us."
Bowden is coming off a quality senior season at Virginia Tech, and the Bucs need to do a better job in the punting game. Tampa Bay ranked 28th in gross punting average last season and 27th in net punting average.
