With a surplus of safeties after obtaining Chris Harris from the Panthers in a trade Tuesday, the Bears traded S Kevin Payne to the Rams late Wednesday afternoon for an undisclosed pick in the 2011 draft.

Payne, who had dropped to the bottom of the Bears’ depth chart at safety before the team picked up Harris, could benefit from a change of scenery in St. Louis, where the status of longtime starting FS O.J. Atogwe is somewhat iffy.

Payne started 22-of-32 games over his three seasons with the Bears after being selected in the fifth round (167th overall) in the 2007 draft. Payne registered 195 tackles, four interceptions, 10 pass breakups and one sack.
