For the second time in 72 hours, the Jaguars have made a deal with Al Davis and the Raiders.

Quentin Groves was sent to Oakland on Wednesday in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Now, the Jaguars have acquired MLB Kirk Morrison and another fifth-rounder in exchange for their fourth-round pick.

I view this as a great deal for the Jaguars. Middle linebacker was at the top of their wish list heading into the weekend, and Morrison became expendable in Oakland after they drafted Rolando McClain. Plus, they added a fifth-round pick, which is outstanding value for a fourth-rounder.

In Morrison, the Jaguars are getting a very dependable player who will come in and start immediately. In five seasons, he started all but one game for the Raiders. Morrison is a tackling machine, making 126 tackles a year. He anticipates very well and can cover the whole field.

The Jaguars were unlikely to find a player in the fourth round who is as good as Morrison. Sure, they might have developed someone into a solid starter or even better, but in Morrison, they get a proven commodity.

This move allows Daryl Smith to be locked in at "Sam," his best position. Last year, the Jaguars had to move Smith around in part because of the disappointing seasons by Justin Durant and Clint Ingram. Those two will now compete for the starting "Will" position.

GM Gene Smith is all about value when it comes to the draft. Morrison is just that; a durable guy who can be the quarterback of the defense and help against the run and the pass immediately. Nice work, Gene.
