Report: Seahawks DE Kerney calls it quits

NFL.com reported Tuesday afternoon that Seahawks DE Patrick Kerney has decided to retire.

The 33-year-old Kerney, who would have been entering his 12th season, was considered by many Seahawks observers to have been living on borrowed time as a Seahawk, anyway, as his 2010 base salary of $5.16 million far exceeded his recent productivity. Kerney did lead the Seahawks with five sacks in 2009, but only one of those sacks came in the final eight games.

Kerney’s relentless playing style made him susceptible to injuries — he has had surgical procedures after each of the last four seasons — and it appears the wear and tear on his body has finally taken its toll. He leaves the game with 82½ career sacks, including an NFC-high 14½ in 2007, and makes the Seahawks’ need for another legitimate pass rusher even greater heading into the draft.
