The Cardinals announced late Tuesday afternoon that they had re-signed unrestricted free-agent S Matt Ware to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6-2, 215-pound Ware played in 11 games (one start) this past season with 27 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 16 with a knee injury.
Ware’s presence as the team’s dime back was sorely missed in the final three regular-season games and both postseason contests. When he was in the lineup, it allowed Pro Bowl SS Adrian Wilson to play closer to the line of scrimmage, which made the defense much more effective.
A seventh-year veteran, Ware originally joined the Cardinals after being claimed off waivers from the Eagles on Sept. 3, 2006. He has played in 53 games (three starts) over the past four seasons for the Cardinals and has also been a key special-teams performer.
