The Texans signed MLB DeMeco Ryans to a six-year contract extension this week, a move that could keep Ryans, who doesn't turn 26 until late July, in Houston throughout the prime of his career. In four NFL seasons, the instinctive, technically sound Ryans, a 2006 second-round pick, has established himself as one of the game's best at his position, and he has played a key role in the development of SLB Brian Cushing, who had an outstanding rookie season in 2009. Ryans, who was a restricted free agent, is the second of the four starters the Texans drafted in '06 to sign a multi-year contract extension with the club. ORT Eric Winston, a third-round pick in '06, signed a five-year deal in 2008. TE Owen Daniels, a restricted free agent and coming off a season-ending knee injury, also could be in line for a long-term deal; he was the Texans' fourth-round pick in '06. DE Mario Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the '06 draft, is signed for two more seasons; there's little doubt he will command a massive second contract after his rich rookie pact.
