Will newly acquired QB David Carr really get a chance to compete with fellow former first-round draft pick Alex Smith for the 49ers' starting QB job? "Specifically, those words haven't been said, but they have said that competition is what they love around here," Carr told the local media. "It makes you feel better." Team insiders told PFW that Smith still figures to get most of the first-team reps in OTAs and training camp. "But if Carr looks clearly better, things will take care of themselves, and the starting situation could definitely change," one source said. As for Shaun Hill, last year's opening-day starter who was traded to Detroit for a seventh-round draft pick, we hear there's no denying how much he will be missed in the locker room, where he was held in high esteem. "That's especially the case with Smith, and that's a pretty big deal," one team insider said. "Shaun and Alex were real close friends and spent a lot of time together studying film."
