Multiple reports out of the Bay Area have indicated that 49ers GM Scot McCloughan is about to resign five weeks before the 2010 draft. The reasons behind the imminent resignation are not yet known, but it does appear that McCloughan is definitely on the way out after meeting Wednesday behind closed doors with the Niners’ upper management at the team headquarters in Santa Clara.

McCloughan was promoted to the GM post in 2008 after serving the previous three years as the team’s vice president of player personnel. There has been no immediate word on who would step up to handle a draft in which the Niners have two picks in the first round. Possibilities include director of player personnel Trent Baalke and director of pro personnel Tom Gamble.
