The Chiefs made an early splash in free agency by signing RB Thomas Jones, cut by the Jets as a cost-cutting maneuver, to bolster their shallow backfield. But contrary to its appearance, the move does not signal the end of Jamaal Charles' run in Kansas City. From what we hear, Charles will remain the Chiefs' primary rusher, with Jones acting more as a complementary back than a lead dog. Although GM Scott Pioli wasn't expected to go after a big-name running back following Charles' monster second half of 2009 — he rushed for 968 yards and seven TDs in the final eight games — the third-year player's lack of size (5-11, 199 pounds) had Chiefs brass concerned about how he'd hold up over the long haul. By adding the 31-year-old Jones, who is coming off a career-high 1,402-yard campaign, the club now has a veteran presence who can lighten Charles' load and take over short-yardage and goal-line duties.
