The Steelers signed 49ers UFA WR Arnaz Battle to a three-year contract on Monday. They also officially announced the signing of Buccaneers UFA S Will Allen to a three-year deal.
Battle played seven seasons for San Francisco, catching 178 passes for 2,150 yards and 11 touchdowns. He started 15 games at receiver in both 2006 and '07, catching 50 passes or more in both seasons. Battle primarily played on special teams last season, catching just 5-40-0 but appearing in 15-of-16 games. He returned a career-best 21 punts in '09 but struggled to hold on to the ball, fumbling six times. What's more, he racked up just 61 yards on punt returns. However, he did notch double-digit tackles on special teams, and the Steelers have been looking to improve their coverage units.
Battle is also likely to compete for the No. 4 WR role behind starters Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes and No. 3 receiver Mike Wallace.
