The Steelers will sign UFA Buccaneers S Will Allen to a three-year contract, reported on Monday.

Allen, 27, has six years of NFL experience, all with Tampa Bay. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, the Buccaneers' DB coach from 2001-05, was Allen's position coach in his first two NFL seasons.

Allen played in eight games last season and made two starts at free safety. He notched 20 tackles and defended one pass. He suffered a broken right thumb in November and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Allen (6-1, 200) has started 26 games in his career.

The expected signing of Allen comes as UFA Ryan Clark, the Steelers' starter at free safety last season, reportedly visits Miami, which is looking to bolster its defensive backfield.

The addition of Allen would also strengthen the Steelers' special-teams coverage units, which struggled covering kickoffs in 2009. Allen has 63 career special-teams tackles with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
