Fox Sports is reporting that the Colts have released starting OLG Ryan Lilja.

Shortly after the Colts lost to the Saints in the Super Bowl, Colts team president Bill Polian publicly cited shortcomings on the offensive line as a key reason for the defeat, setting the stage for a move toward obtaining bigger, stronger run blockers, according to team insiders.

Considered a solid grinder with a good head on his shoulders, Lilja was one of three undrafted starters on the Colts’ offensive line last season. The 6-2, 290-pound sixth-year pro started every game for the Colts in 2009 and is only 28 years old. But a $1.73 million bonus he was expected to receive soon might have hastened his departure.

The top candidate on the roster to replace Lilja at present would appear to be Jamey Richard, who will be entering his third season. Richard was Lilja’s primary backup in ’09.
