QB Chad Pennington will return to Miami, having signed a one-year contract that will pay him $2.5 million, according to ESPN.

Pennington reportedly had requested a no-trade clause, but the Dolphins denied the request. Instead, they agreed to pay Pennington an additional $1.5 million if he is traded.

Pennington is expected to serve as a backup and mentor to starting QB Chad Henne. His re-signing raises the question of whether the Dolphins will retain QB Tyler Thigpen, whom they acquired from Kansas City for a fifth-round draft choice Sept. 29.
