The Giants signed FS Antrel Rolle to a deal for five years and a reported $37 million, $15 million guaranteed, one of the richest deals ever given to a safety.

The move helps solidify a secondary that was in disarray with CB Aaron Ross injured the first part of the season and especially after FS Kenny Phillips suffered a serious knee injury in Week Two.

Phillips' health is a key concern. Rolle's signing partially protects the Giants in case Phillips can't return to full strength.

The Giants kicked around talk with free-agent S Darren Sharper and showed interest in restricted free agents O.J. Atogwe and Antoine Bethea. But in the end, they settled on Rolle, 27, who is considered a player reaching his prime.

The Cardinals now have lost their second key free agent along with LB Karlos Dansby, while also watching QB Kurt Warner opt for retirement and trading WR Anquan Boldin to the Ravens after winning the NFC West each of the past two seasons.
