The Redskins are prepared to release a host of big-name players, all over the age of 30, according to multiple reports.

Among the expected cuts are DT Cornelius Griffin, WR Antwaan Randle El, ORG Randy Thomas, RB Ladell Betts, CB Fred Smoot and RB Rock Cartwright. The Redskins were one of the older teams in the NFL last season but clearly are going with a younger team under new head coach Mike Shanahan.

Griffin is perhaps the biggest surprise of the lot, but he has been plagued by injuries for much of his Redskins career.

Randle El was the team’s primary slot receiver and punt returner the past few seasons but has not lived up to the free-agent contract he signed in 2006.

Thomas battled injuries through a solid career but didn’t appear to be a strong fit in Shanahan’s new scheme.

Betts is expected to be cut, but because he ended the season on injured reserve, the team will have to grant him an injury settlement.

Smoot, 30, had been demoted to the team's sub packages on defense.

The team also has released Cartwright, a special-teams ace for many years.
