The Chiefs announced Thursday that they have signed OLB Mike Vrabel to a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vrabel, 34, was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade prior to the 2009 season. In his lone year with the club, he started all 14 of the games he played and racked up 52 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. A 13-year veteran, he had previously spent time with the Patriots and Steelers.

Now in the latter stages of his career, Vrabel likely was retained to provide leadership to a young team and help teach new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel's scheme, which he was part of for many years in New England. Considering the Chiefs' lack of OLB depth, he has a good chance to remain a starter in 2010.
